Two female patients presented with old dental crowns that were made many years ago.
Dental crowns traditionally were made of metal and porcelain. The metal core provided
the dental crown with strength to withstand biting forces while porcelain layered over
the metal core provided white aesthetics. Both were unhappy with the dark black line at
the gum margin. This is a result of the showing of the metal core.
The old crowns were removed and replaced with full porcelain crowns.
Full porcelain crowns are entirely made of porcelain. They do not have a
problem of a dark black line at the gum level, unlike metal-porcelain crowns with their metal cores.
This greatly improves the aesthetic results and allows our dental clinician to place the edge of the
full porcelain crown above the gum line which makes it easier to clean and keep the gums healthy.
